“INTERCASTE MARRIAGE: A BEAUTIFUL DIFFERENCE”

-Sukanya Singh

Society is upgrading, people are modernised, new ideas are explored with creative skills, and technological convergence are making people closer day by day and establishing them with wide principles of variant theories. Materialistic developments are at a great pace in today’s world. But the inner engineering of a human mind and their thought processes still needs to improve. I was on the way to college, I heard a lady talking to another lady that “... she is getting married with a Bengali Boy. How will she survive there?” I observed carefully and can make out that their expressions were very much unwanted. It is this small juncture of words of that lady that forced me to research on the ‘intercaste marriages’ for are they really so harmful for the people of the society?

Lord Krishna in the sacred book ‘Gita’ also encourages the intercaste marriages. He says “the practice of caste discrimination is manmade and those who follow it are termed as ‘unmanly’.” Every segment on the Earth has its advantages and disadvantages. It is the duty of all of us that we understand, ignore the negatives and welcome the positives of these segments. After so much of advancing in human world, intercaste marriages are still considered a taboo just because people fear their caste will become impure and polluted and they will end finally of not being the ‘superior’ caste. They think that two people of different castes cannot dwell under a same roof. But why to bother so much on such bits and pieces when the two individuals have absolute loyalty and devotion for each other?

The Sikh Dharma founder Guru Nanak ji encouraged the casteless society where every single individual is one and same. Where there is no difference, no class, no caste, and no divisions. Where there is faith, love, devotion and dedication. He is aligned with no religion. He says, “There is one god who dwells in every god’s creations and constitutes the eternal truth.”

Suhaib Webb, a contemporary American-Muslim Educator, Activist and Lecturer, served as an Imam and a resident scholar in communities across the United States read the spirit of Islamic Law and Islam and thus has provided the quote that there is no caste system or demarcations between races.  This is clearly proved by the statement of the Prophet, “The most honoured amongst you with Allah is the most pious of you.” It was probably the last sermon of the prophet.

Again in the context of the first chapter of the Holy Bible, it is written that God has created human beings in the image of God himself. Therefore they are all holy and superior like all other creations of god on the earth. Thus all ‘human beings are same and equal.’

I checked some video clips and there I got the famous Indian yogi and a mystic Sadhguru’s.

”I do not like anything  intercaste because first of all when I meet people it never even occurs to me what caste they are. So I don’t know how to do intercaste. I only see human beings. This is a misunderstanding which is led to a discriminatory process” says Sadhguru. Differences are itself avery beautiful jewels of the society.  People get to experience the unique lifestyles of the people belonging to other castes. They get to explore their food, attires, festivals, ceremonies, rituals, codes of conduct, language, music and many more that makes itself a wonderful arena of diversified element within a single community at a time.

Hence from the above quoted verses and quotes, we can make out that ‘intercaste marriage’ is only a narrow concept in the minds of the human beings. It is not natural but totally man-made. Every human being is born free with purity, in the image of God. Everyone has the sole right to love another person. They have the same capabilities and potentials like the other individuals. No one is weak. Everyone is strong. Therefore people should stop fighting raising such unreal topics. Intercaste marriage is not an issue but a mere leitmotif that is revolving around people’s heads and distorting societies. People should believe in god, on themselves and the work they do. They should try to build an egalitarian based society only then human civilization would be said to be developed.
